  1. The Leafs just got tired of waiting on this guy. He was given every opportunity in toronto to show his stuff. He had flashes of good play followed by many games of sub par play. He isn't physical to the point of shying away from contact. He never seems to be engaged emotionally in any game. I'm not sure if the guy actually even likes hockey.

  2. My thort on the matter is that I hope each guy is happy and has a nice time with their new teams.

  3. i really like this trade for both sides as well, both teams have something that is valuable to the other. Toronto with a young solid defensemen and the sharks have a surplus of picks.

  4. Good for lily. Treliving seems to have a reputation as the most stand up guy so he sent him somewhere where he’ll play for sure. Not exactly sure why they needed to include benning as a #9 guy though.

  5. In the short term, if Matt Benning fits in with the Leafs, they could win this in the short term. Liljegren is at the age where it's make or break time and he can still be a top 4 D, especially in San Jose, but the Leafs in this trade get a known NHL defenseman and couple of lottery tickets. It looks good for both teams and the Sharks can afford to give Timothy every opportunity to play top 4 minutes and be an impact player.

  6. I've seen some "I hope this doesn't come back to haunt the Leafs" stuff. Whether he gets his game going or not in SJ, just remember that he became a non option in Toronto. Waiting for him to reach his ceiling got tiresome. Anyway, best of luck to him.

  7. Good move by the Leafs. This frees up a few million bucks of capspace for a defensemen they aren't even using. Big win. Hopefully he can find his game in San Jose he was never gonna get into the lineup consistently here.

  8. Could this be a cap clearing move so that Toronto has room to bring back the people coming off of injured reserve? Cause I’m guessing Benning doesn’t have a $3 million cap hit

  9. The Leafs got more from the Sharks for an healthy scratch than Detroit got for a guy who was on their first pair with Seider

  10. The last Leaf's defenceman that Toronto drafted outside the first round to play more than 50 games for Toronto was … Dermott.

Prior to 2015 the next Leafs defenceman drafted outside the first round that played at least 50 games for Toronto was … Carl Gunnarsson (2007).

The most number of games a non first round defenceman drafted by Toronto since 2016 has played for Toronto so far is 6 games (Mac Hollowell). Kral played in 2, Durzi never played for Toronto.

Maybe guys like Niemela will be able to play but in my opinion the Leafs have really struggled to draft and develop defenceman for some time now. I hope Liljegrin is able to turn things around in San Jose.

  11. If I can add my thort (sorry Shannon, couldn't resist lol) as a Leafs fan, I'm happy for Lilly. He's not breaking into this lineup anytime soon, and he's going to get a chance to play now.

  12. Leafs gain 1.75 in cap space and a 3rd round pick that would be 1st or 2nd pick in the 3rd round. I wish Liljegren luck.

  13. As a first round pick he was underwhelming. He wasn’t skilled enough to play in the top 4 and was a punching bag in the playoffs. I’m glad he’s gone as this dragged on long enough. He’s a good player but the bar is high here with the Leafs.

  14. Liljegren's issue in Toronto was one step forward, then an injury or something else that affected his confidence. San Jose may be the environment that allows him to get some traction & regain his mojo. He has talent & to me, it was the 'between-the-ears' stuff that he couldn't seem to navigate. It's a hard league especially in the harsh lights of TO. Good luck in San Jose.

  15. Salary dump for low draft picks, the Leafs don't have a clue how to trade for draft picks.

  16. Benning most assuredly goes on waivers tomorrow. He, along with rutta, have been really bad on a defense that’s really bad.

I don’t see a way he plays in the nhl for the leafs baring injuries

  17. As a Capitals fan, we got Rasmus Sandin for a pretty reasonable price because Toronto had too many defensemen. I don't think this deal is as good for San Jose as the Capitals' deal for Sandin was, but I still do think this is a good deal for San Jose.

  18. Leafs really needed to clear up cap space for players coming off LTIR.

I dont think the player will be on the roster with the Hawk soon joining the D.

Draft pics are the main return and the 3 mil in cap space allow the Leafs to stay under the cap.

  19. This is why cap space is such a gold weapon. This is like the 4th time this off season Grier has used it to pick up a player who is looking for a more direct path to the NHL. I like this pickup for the sharks. With a new change of scenery and a lot less pressure we could be looking back at this as a steal if it goes well.

  20. I like the trade , Lelgren gets a fresh start , Leafs get a physical RH D guy . Picks never hurt either imo . A win for both teams .

  21. My thorts are that the Red Wings won’t win 3 consecutive games this season.. 😢
And Kane will request a trade sooner rather than later

  22. I think that Timothy needs to have some sci-fi genetic treatment to get him more fingers so he can fit every single Stanley cup ring that he will win in San Jose

  23. Honestly a potential win/win for both teams. Leafs get some cap space and a pick and the sharks get a new younger D man with a much higher ceiling than Benning.

  24. Only issue I have is that leaf’s have an aging d core. What happens when tanev drops off completely in 1 year. And oel is getting up there too.

  25. It should've been Washington!!!! but really with Roy out Liljigren could have been useful and part of the reetool on the fly. feels like this was a situation of poor development in all honesty.
