You woke up and chose violence today, didn’t you?

  2. ackabakapizza

The Islanders aren’t in New York City. They are on Long Island.

  3. moosebaloney

To true NYC inhabitants, the Islanders might as well be in New Jersey.

Better question. If you live in Jersey what makes you cheer for the rangers vs Devils?
And where is the boundary between devils fans vs flyers fans?

Original 6. My family’s fandom predates the expansion era!

  6. BabyKub

Minnesota Wild (but the Isles if I have to)

  7. GamerETrain

None, haha, losing to both of them in the first round past 2 playoffs 🥲

The vast majority of hockey fans in NYC are Rangers fans, with a tiny minority of Islanders fans in Brooklyn and Queens from their time playing at Barclays Center in Brooklyn plus some people who grew up on Long Island as Islanders fans and moved to the city as adults.

Probably whoever is beating the Bruins

  10. OchoDee

NYC roots for the Rangers. Long Island roots for the islanders

Y’all should just prepare for the Yankees/Mets World Series…..lol very possible

I don’t live in NYC but I love the Islanders. Unlike the Jets, when the Islanders have horrible years I still watch. It’s pain I suffer through because I love the franchise. The Jets are rough. The Islanders and Mets got new owners, and it helped. The Jets need to ownership. In the meantime, for football, I’ll watch red zone for fantasy updates lmao.

Lol get ready for hours of explanations on 40+ years of generational mental gymnastics on why the other NY team isn’t real and built on a pile of trash haha, or something like that

Did you mean to ask people from NY or specifically NYC (city)? I live in CT, and know, 90% of NYC residence cheer for rangers, as they are in, New York City. Now if you meant to say, people from New York, you have 3 teams to chose from.

Not saying you woke up and chose violence, but damn, could be seen that way lol.

I live in NYC but grew up on long island. die hard islanders fan. What a great rivalry.

Semantics aside, it’s generally a difference in culture between NYC (Rangers) and Long Island (Islanders). Even though Brooklyn is technically part of Long Island, it’s culturally more akin to NYC.

A few years back when the Islanders played some of their home games at Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn attendance wasn’t all that great, because people from « the island » didn’t want to commute to « the city », and people from « the city » already had a team.

Unlike the other sports (except maybe NBA) Rangers own NYC by themselves. Even the Islanders short stint in Brooklyn didn’t make an impact. They’re the team from the suburbs, we’re the team from the city. That’s that.

  18. Question for people from Washington. Who do you cheer for? Kraken or Capitals?

  19. SabresMakeMeDrink

I’m from upstate but afaik NYC proper is more Rangers while LI is all Islanders (with Queens being the borough that’s more mixed)

  20. EAmicrotransactions

City folks and blue collar workers: Rangers

Suburban folks and the other half of the blue collar workers: Islanders

Completely baseless opinion created by my own anecdotal observation

Ever since I was a kid, I always assumed Yankees fans were Rangers fans, and Mets fans were Islanders fans. Don’t know why. I asked my New Yorker coworker and he says that usually seems to be the case.

    Can anyone confirm or deny?

Edit: looking at a map, it makes sense, but I can say with certainty that my thought process was more in the vein of Original 6 Rangers and olde-tymey Yankees vs the two later conceived teams

  22. TECHNIK23

Huh are you stupid bro.. Long Island cheers for Islanders, NYC cheers for Rangers.

  23. loupr738

The Rangers. Long Island is a whole different thing. Might as well be Syracuse

  24. Open-Paint7724

Not from NYC but Rangers are NYs team.
