From the article: “The deal I’ve been on at the time I signed was completely fair, » MacKinnon said. « No complaints at all, but you don’t want to be labeled as the most underpaid guy for your whole career. But I see some numbers out there of what I’m looking for, it’s not true, crazy numbers. But hopefully the deal that gets done people see as fair for both sides. »

Fair for both sides is really the most you can ask and that’s what I’m hoping for too. Given that if McDavid were to hit UFA next year, he’d get 14-15 million easily, I think a fair deal for Nate would be somewhere in the 12-13 region.
For additional context, Crosby’s current 8.7 million deal was 14.5% of the cap hit at the time of signing. That would be 11.96M AAV next season, probably a little more when Nate’s new deal will kick in. McDavid’s 12.5 million was 16.67% of the cap and would now equal 13.7 million AAV. So 12-13 sounds pretty fair in that context as well.

Reads to me like he NOT trying to be the highest paid player in the league.

To be honest, I’ll be fine with any number. If Joe is cool with it and Nate is happy, I’m good. I am of course still riding the high of winning the cup after waiting 20 years. Give everyone all the money!
blondespikes22
Sounds good 2 me, that way he can focus on giving his all and not be concerned w/ the contract
Replacables
Any chance of 10.5 AAV? really anything at or below 12 I’d be happy with
Grimmer026
He’s smart, he is at peak value right now. Why wait if you are him
HoodPhones
I still predict it’ll be 11.75×8. For a team next summer to sign him to a 7 year deal, it’d have to be an AAV of 13.4M to match the total value. There’s not really any *competitive* teams that could offer him that
OldDogNewSkate
8 years x 10.91125m for 87.29m total
(be really expecting closer to 12m aav)
stoneman9284
I don’t really care what he gets. He deserves whatever we can afford to pay him, and then some. But I really hope he takes a number that allows us to stay competitive.
Chidorii303
So he’s saying he doesn’t want to be known for being an underpaid player but doesn’t say anything about being the highest either so imo this is good
ChasingDarwin2
Franchise players r my fav. Loyalty means a lot. Now that he’s got his cup he can settle in and make this franchise his. Let’s get em a few more for good measure.
CensoryDeprivation
Pay him. I can chip in.
Subterania
I’m still convinced it’s 8x$12.3m (just adding EJ’s contract to his current)
_redacteduser
I’m gunna start an Avs only fans to help pay whatever he wants.
ttttttttui
He’s already taken less. Give him whatever he wants
maxmc20
This is a player that understands his worth while still wanting to be a piece of a franchise that can do great things with the other pieces around him
