@Avalanche du Colorado

Speculation that it will be done at some point and that the AAV will be $10m+.

    I could have tweeted that.

  2. Square_Saltine

League minimum has a few digits in it

  3. makalder

$10/yr is a great deal, and not a single digit.

He’s got an obligation to his peers to take what he’s worth. You really think he’s only worth a couple million more than Robert Thomas or Jordan Kyrou? With the cap going up in the coming years too, wouldn’t worry. The number will be what it is – he’s and Av for life boys and girls.

  5. Don’t care what it is, as long as MacK spends his entire career with the Avs.

  6. HockeyCoachHere

    If it’s under $12.5m it’s a great team deal.

If it’s under $11, it’s an absurd steal.

Nate will celebrate the new profitable extension…by going back to the gym.

I want him to be paid what he’s worth but At the same time I also want to believe that he knows that:

the more money left in the teams cap space equals the team affording better players to play alongside and ultimately more success

  9. Canadian__Ninja

I don’t think anyone expected it to be a single digit. He deserves to make more than $9.00 a year

  10. thibs69

if we can have him and Cale for less than 20 combined thats a great deal in my eyes

Anything under $12/12.5m AAV is great. The expiring EJ deal will slide right over to that like they didn’t lose anything. It’s the $14m+ that scares me, because that’s a Rodrigues type of player potentially just gone and there’s not exactly the best prospect depth that’ll slide right in to replace players they can’t re-sign. Yeah, cap increase helps, but that’s also going towards making the Nuke and other contracts look better, that can’t just be written off as part of Mack’s increase alone.

  12. BlindManBaldwin

It will probably be ten digits, per sources.

  13. Maess420

If Makar took 9 mil To be the best defenceman in the league I’m guessing Mac settles in around 10 1/2 to 11

  14. LevelSample

Was anyone, even those most absurdly optimistic, considering single digits as even a remote possibility?

  15. OctaVariuM8

I’m just glad to hear the extension is pretty close to being done. Sure it would be nice if he took a discount, but after winning the cup I’m not sure I particularly care! He’s earned whatever contract he signs.

  16. Think he’s smart enough to take something that gives us maneuverability in the future. I would think he realizes the core and quality at the team and they can keep this ball rolling for awhile. You keep winning, endorsement money can be more than salary anyways.

Elliotte Friedman speculated he could become the highest paid player in the NHL once the deal is done. What do you guys think?

  18. ImperialeSismico

You’ve got to think the role he plays in that locker room is worth a little extra. Seeing a lot of comparisons to matthews and marner but those guys seem like lifeless wet noodles compared to the leadership Mac K brings.

  19. adalaza

No team has won the cup with a 10 million dollar contract, but fingers crossed

  20. WhiteCollarNeal

After 21 years since Bourque hoisted the cup, he helped deliver the Stanley Cup to the Avs. Mackinnon sacrificed in order to make it happen. It’s now his turn to get what he believes is a fair value

  21. usernamefromhell

Oh so what everyone already assumed? Gotcha

  22. DomDomDom18

I’d be pleasantly surprised if it was under $13M per. A lot of people here have been misinterpreting his comments about taking less – he said he did last time, but he didn’t, it became a massive bargain when he leveled up. He’d likely get the max as a UFA, so anything beneath that is probably what he’d consider to be team-friendly.

  23. brunnor

Anything under 12 is a big win imo assuming 7-8 years.

  24. AtraposJM

Very happy to hear this. Glad they aren’t waiting until the last minute. Will be nice to have him extended so it’s not looming all season.

  25. Talinn_Makaren

This is great news. You never regret re-signing one of the best players in the game. Becoming the highest paid player is not the darkest timeline, leaving in free agency is.

  26. SemiSolidSnake11

He deserves north of 12.5 million dollars at least. 10 or 11 million would be a steal. If he ends up making about 12, you just give him all of EJ’s contract and then you can either sign EJ for 1 or 2 million AAV or simply let him walk. With the cap going up, that still leaves plenty of room for expansion and contention.

  27. time2churn

I expect really close to 12m. Right at 12m or just below.

  28. MSAvalanchefan

I think we all agree. Pay the man whatever and keep him with this organization
