I mean saying signing mid tier guys long term is a bad idea isn’t exactly a new opinion. We’ve all heard before this that signing guys like Copp or chairot to those years and dollars was a mistake. Hell I agree about the chairot one being to much to long. It’s not a very flattering article but it’s not exactly some new take.

The Toronto media circle has some of the worst journalism in the western hemisphere. Every single article they have ever put out is either a complete joke or a rip word for word from another outlet.

The Leafs have “two of the four best hockey players in the world on their roster”? One, maybe, in Matthews. But two of the top four? That’s pretty debatable. And even if you think it is true what does that say about their playoff record?
Wonder what he will write when Matthew’s walks away from the leafs in 2 years?
Talking alot of shit for a team that hasn’t won a playoff series in 18 years. However if anyone is an expert in over paying players its the leafs.
Must be hard to watch the prime years of Matthews/Marner/Reilly be wasted. Id be annoyed to haha.

I feel like this article would really benefit from an expositional paragraph explaining *why* the author felt it was necessary to compare the Leafs to the Wings, or spend so many words bashing the Wings.
Maybe they couldn’t find any favorable comparisons against other capped-out contenders so he thought it would be a good idea to compare the Leafs to a team that’s still rebuilding? Lmao.
I agree that the Chariot signing was kinda terrible even if the cap goes up. Copp it feels like we bought a little high on, but we don’t really have any 2 slot centers and we couldn’t keep rolling with what amounted to Larkin + 3 third/fourth line centers. You just hope that you get 2-3 productive seasons out of Copp and in the later part of that you get cheap seasons from Kasper on an ELC. Then when the Copp deal expires Kasper is your 1B with Larkin.
Where the article is terrible is the implication that we “gambled” on Husso while they got a 2 time cup winner in Murray. Nobody in their right fucking mind thinks Murray is a good goaltender today. Husso has at least produced a save % above .915 in 6 of his 9 pro seasons spanning across 3 leagues. Murray hasn’t been relevant since 2017.
Also, just because Toronto decided to pay 4 guys way too much money doesn’t mean it’s a universal that paying mid range players is a no-no across the league. Yzerman has a good track record of getting his stars to take less so they can win. Every major contract on Tampa he signed. So if we can get Larks at 8 AAV and the kids around 8-10 AAV long term in 2 seasons then we most definitely have money to sign some decent middle pair/six guys. The Toronto model hasn’t won shit in 6 playoff appearances.

Sounds to me like somebody is feeling threatened by an up and coming team and decided to write a hit piece to ease the minds of their fans. I am indeed more excited for the upcoming season than maple leaf fans are! Haven’t had this level of excitement pre season in quite some time!! LGRW!!!!

That is just a terrible take. While yes they might not win anything there has been so many good players taken in the mid-to late first round. These are some of the players who were taken in the first round after pick 10: 2020 Seth Jarvis, Dawson Mercer / 2019 Cole Caufield, Alex Newhook, / 2018 K’Andre Miller, / 2017 Nick Suzuki, Martian Necas, Robert Thomas, Filip Chytil, / 2016 Charlie McAvoy, Jakob Chychrun, / 2015 Matthew Barzal, Kyle Connor, Thomas Chabot, Brock Bosser. Let’s also keep in mind Yzermans Draft history…even if you do not agree with his signings, he’s going to continue to find value with his draft picks. Keep doubting the wizard and see where it gets you.

The entire hockey world is aware of the Yzerplan and are in awe of his ability to repeat what he built in Tampa, nothing but respect for Detroit from around the league.
It’s going to be a fun ride watching the Wings remain calm and carry on while the big smoke panics and self destructs after the inevitable first round exit.
Wouldn’t it be a treat to see Toronto win the presidents trophy and lock first up and have Detroit squeak into the post season and roll the Leafs up and smoke em?
While this is clearly fan-level journalism from someone not very familiar with our cap situation, every fan base has their own versions. I heard someone, with complete seriousness, send in a voicemail to The Athletic Hockey show asking who will have a better career between Seider and Cale freakin’ Makar. Just don’t take these things too seriously.
Watch the Wings bounce the leafs in the first round as an eight seed.

This article reads like it was written by a middle school kid. Poor writing, conclusions drawn from no actual support. Also, love the part spouting how great a team Toronto has only to then highlight how they suck in the playoffs.
This is utterly hilarious and completely wrong.
I very much disagree on the stance about Husso. The goalie market was really thin and if we aren’t aggressive getting Husso or Campbell we woulda been stuck with someone like Martin Jones who gives us very few nights of winning hockey. Husso at least gives us a chance to win way more than anyone else that was available.
I don’t disagree with the writer on the Copp and Chiarot contracts. I’ve had this stance since day 1 of FA. I woulda rather kept their total money them same cut their term in half. The AAV is fine because we have cap, but the years are just almost comically long for 2 guys who haven’t been exactly game changers.
