  1. Saw a quote that I found interesting:
The only people more excited about this hiring than Flyer fans are Penguins fans.

  2. Growing up in Montreal and being a diehard Habs fan, I watched the Habs win a lot of cups. But i like the Flyers, and would love to see them win another cup after so many years. Flyers fans are so passionate!

  3. Torts was born to coach this team. I lost my father a few months ago and he was the biggest Flyers fan there ever was. He always wanted Torts to be our coach. I am so pumped that he's here and he's going to turn it all around. Go Flyers!!!!!

  4. It takes extreme preparation, intelligence and keeping a sense of realist humor to communicate with Torts on his level. Taryn not only brought that but more. Great job!

  5. Congrats to the Philadelphia Flyers for hiring a proven senile nut-job like Tortorella, who will personally guarantee they keep missing the playoffs while competing for the draft lottery for as long as he is at the helm.
The Flyers have unofficially told their loyal fans that their plan is to both re-build and tank at the same time.
Predicting here that the Flyers will be the very last NHL team that Tortorella coaches, and he won't last the full four years of his contract.
    Watch and learn.
    Next.

  6. Toughness has not been the problem with the flyers recently, it's been a lack of team speed, and players that can finish.

  7. I'm a Habs fan but I have to tell you if I was from Philly I would be fired up. I can't wait to see what Torts is going to do to this team.Gotta love the guy!!!!

  8. We all loved him in Columbus. Hope he does well just not against CBJ.

  9. Lifelog NYR fan here and I can tell you philly fans from watching what he did to change our culture that you have the best coach in hockey now. Congrats

  10. Boys on The Flyers: get ready to get your feathers ruffled and some hard ass training and culture. I have always liked Torts. Can he be tough as freaking nails? Yes! But, that is what this Team needs! Speaking as a true hockey fan and Rangers supporter. Go Torts, Go Flyers!!! I hope you guys turn it around. Mr Snyder will be proud. Lets Go NYR!!!

  11. Tort's is a perfect fit in Philly. The Tortorella Family Foundation does a great job helping children, animals and environmental conservation. He's a terrific coach and a better man. His confrontational relationship with the media is simple. The media lies, he doesn't.

  12. I'm in my mid 50's and have seen a lot of hockey over the years. This will be interesting to watch for sure.

  13. If players buying in then they got to go
We’re going to see who wants to be a flyer and who doesn’t

  14. The way he mentioned how hockey was played before the lockout makes me miss even more how hockey was played!

  15. not a flyers fan but ive been saying Torts as the next flyers coach since AV was fired.
perfect fit for the city and perfect fit for the situation the flyers are currently in. dont want to rebuild? then Torts would be the perfect fit for maximizing and extracting the most out of the team. plus, he always showed a huge dislike for Crosby and the penguins. match made in heaven.

  16. Ironically, From What I Remember, Without Stats In Front Of Me, Wasn't It Under John Tortorella, Columbus, That Brandon Dubinsky Played His Best Hockey?

  17. Hearing him talk is firing me up rn for the season🤣🤣I can’t even lie

  18. Nice interview Taryn!!! When Torts was with the Rangers I didn't really like him very much (being a lifelong Flyers fan is probably why), but also respected him. I saw a segment on TV when he (Torts) would take a child with cerebral palsy to Rangers games and became friends with the young man (I think he was 10 years old at the time, but not sure). I have a daughter (now 26 years old) with severe cerebral palsy who watches the Flyers games with me. Man that segment tugged hard at my heart and I changed my entire attitude towards Torts and I became a fan. Needless to say, I am very happy with Torts being the new Flyers coach!!!

  19. Blue Jackets fan here… thanks for the fun memories Torts. Best of luck to you. Congrats Philly fans. 🍻
PS. On a side note, I really really miss seeing Bobrovsky is the Columbus cannon jersey.

  20. The rose will wilt quickly once Torts loses control. Just a matter of time. He is NOT a good coach. Too much emotion

  21. The Flyers are in a rebuild and need to be patient with Torts…. Some veterans might be moved …. maybe Hayes and JVR….

  22. Great interview by Taryn, and an interesting discussion for sure. Very much enjoyed the directed questions and the path of the interview; Taryn, you've become an underrated broadcaster, but really, only because you are working regionally. I would hope the Philly fan base recognize your quality, especially as it has developed and solidified over the last couple of years. ESPN should be knocking.
I'll be intrigued to see what happens this year. I've watched a bunch of Philly games over the last few years because I'm a Brian Elliot fan. My main base for hockey, however, is Vancouver. We had a less than stellar experience with Tortorella, unfortunately, although he arrived with similar fanfare. So definitely curious to see how he's able to motivate this team. I've always found Torts to be a mercurial coach and personality. He'd be a fantastic ear to pick about hockey and the NHL, for sure

  23. I'm not even specifically a Flyers fan, but a hockey fan (sounds lame: my apologies) and a logic fan (look at my username, for instance), and that's why I love Torts & would consider myself a "Torts fan". I have friends that I used to play the NHL video games online with that were all Flyers fans, though, so I'd be happy for them (so I'm a transitive Flyers fan, I guess), but really I just like competition.
But to go back to the logic part, I love how Torts talks about why he does certain things (admitting to mistakes, as well), for example that he's hard on you because he cares about you, as both an athlete and a person, and his job is to push you as hard as he can to make you the best of both (because that's what all games (from a Game Theory perspective, to get academic) of skill require, whether it be hockey or life or anything else that requires pushing yourself to perform at your best (because everyone else is trying to be the best, as well) and fully admits there will be conflicts (and that's actually where the bonding will take place and you'll have guys like Hartnell essentially praising him (including the admission and apology Torts gave when he didn't actually have evidence of Hartnell being out of position; there's that honesty again), although of course Hartnell is one of the coolest and kindest off-ice players ever (I didn't see him much on the ice despite having NHL.tv with a VPN over the last decade and watching multiple games, so that's why I don''t comment on it too much other than to say I respect him; I never saw him embellish or anything like that), despite being benched for the first time on that Splittin' Chiclets interview (IIRC) after 1000+ games, after which he goes on to score 4 goals in 5 games (and jokes that people say, "what coatching!" but there is some truth to that, whether you're conscious of it or not; at the level of the NHL and the nature of games of skill/sports, it's hard to determine why, when seemingly doing the same thing, yields positive results when other times it doesn't, so again, perhaps that was due to the coaching).
It's funny going back to proofread this after making a comment down below ;-).
I really think his "track record," his candidness about his maturity, his logic & diction in the way he describes why he does certain things, his admission of mistakes & the need to evolve as a coach & learn from the players, and other reasons will make him a great coach and I look forward to seeing that beautiful P-based emblem (which could say for more than just "Philadelphia" – even just generally "playing" or "players" or "puck", "positive", "performance," "perservearance", "persistence", "pugnacity", "powerful", "prick" (like the annoyance of plants (not a word I will put in quotes , unless it's poison(ous) (I won't put this in quotes, as it could be misinterpretted) ivy or something else with irritation -;-)) with it), but not players (another one, but I already quoted it) being assholes necessarily (maybe on the ice)), "perplexing", "poise", and the dictionary & thesaurus can keep coming up with more) with those motion marks behind it, to indicate fast-flying, high-"pace," optimal performance (another word I already quoted).
That emblem could create an allitation like "Philadelphia players poised to play with and off the puck with poise, passion, pugnacity, persistence, and perserverance with high pace, pushing, plugging away, and punching & pricking you powerfully with structure, physicality, & finesse, the price to press opponents to pay the piper for poor presence, producing a positive point percentage and complete the period of play penned "playoffs", projecting their protective paraphernalia (sounds like something Doc Emerick would say, eh?) producing percipitation prior to posession of the polished prize, passionate fans passengers to the passage."
Sorry that was contrived with some repitition (and could most certainly be improved), but I'm quite pleased (yeah…you're all semantically satiated with any "P" word now, I'm sure haha) for the Flyers and wish them (including Torts) & their fans optimal success.
I only just now got back into hockey after watching for years (I remember rooting for Arturs Irbe and I still marvel at Pavel Datsyuk, which reminds me of Claude Giroux, but unfortunately I haven't been following much these last few years due to COVID-19 and a few other things so it's a shame (it seems to me, but I am ignorant) to see that he is no longer a Flyer and I'll have to look more into that.
I'm excited for you Flyers fans! A more mature Torts (one who apologizes for saying "shit" at a press conference (just a highlight. Sorry to be repitious, but he speaks so eloquently & just generally well, imo, admitting his faults such as wanting an offensive-minded assistant coach because he's not that offensively creative and that he has & will continue to make mistakes)) should make for a force with which to be reckoned.

  24. I’ve NEVER liked Torts . But I’ll be honest , he’s saying all the things I want to hear right now . And I truly believe him when he says he’s had a love for this city and what it was built on since he’s became a coach . But the biggest thing I took from this interview is him recognizing the Flyers culture , understanding the history of this team and how this team was always tough . We all know like he said we can’t be the bullies again , but we can still have a tough team. A team that has other players looking at that schedule and saying DAM we have to play Philly this week ! This team needs to get bigger and tougher . We need some of our history flowing back In Our veins again ! Let’s be tough ! Let’s be Good ! Let’s be PHILLY !

  25. This isnt going to work out. The other teams he turned around had legit talent that just needed to be tweaked. Philly is going to keep losing. He will be fired in 3 years.

  26. First time here…..FANTASTIC INTERVIEW!!! VERY, VERY IMPRESSIVE!!! I absolutely love what Tortorella had to say. Too bad he is getting handed a SHITHOLE of a team!!!
Welcome to the Flyers HOOD JOHN, the place where those running the team think they are the brightest people in the room…no in the game….and get proven they are not…DAILY!!!!

  27. I’m a Rangers fan living right next door just north of Philadelphia. This is a good move for the. Flyers he is a great Coach. His defense first and let the offense happen off the other teams defensive break downs. I don’t think he will make a lot of fans here but he will develop good players for the next guy. And he will make your team a contender. He holds players accountable. My honest opinion he takes a team that is getting a D grade right now he will make them a B or B plus team. It will take 3 seasons to turn the team around and once that’s happened I have the feeling that Torts will be gone. This guys a very good coach so was AV. What surprised me was that Torts said he hadn’t watched a full 60 minutes of a game of last years team. That tells me he doesn’t really know what he has in the flyers and he is hoping what he’s done in the past will work. He has had more centerpieces to work with in the other teams he’s coached. He’s got his work cut out for him with this team.

  28. One missed opportunity to ask Torts, how hard or easy is it to throw players under the bus? i.e. Laine's obvious lack of desire to play hard. But all in all I love Taryn and the fact she's doing this without the pomp and "dress up" of tv makes me love her even more. Great job.

  29. CBJ fan here- I grew up in Philly so I am really interested to see how this goes – miss him here in Columbus for sure, but Flyers fans, if you want to culture change he is your guy. His no BS attitude will give the right team the intensity and the edge it needs to break through to that next level. Good luck torts and bring home a winner!

  30. Tortorella's living in the past. The game has passed him by. His passive/aggressive shtick will not play well with the softer more coddled players of today's NHL. There's gonna be a "sh1t show" in Philly!

  31. Flyers fan here, we need a new owner and GM. We need another Ed Schneider. Fans across the country are bored to death to watch a low contact game. We don't want to watch a basketball game we want a Hockey game. Flyers stadium was sold out for years. Thanks Flyers warriors for going to war and playing you're heart out. My dad was a philadelphia teenager during the broadstreet bullies times and the city united. specially, when we played Russia and crushed them. Philly is still Philly. I think Will Smith shoulda decked Chris Rock for talking trash about his wife.
