  1. Family is a smoke screen to leave Calgary gracefully. Sure it may be partially true, but not the main reason. Notice Gaudreau himself hasn't mentioned family again after the signing. If Gaudreau's camp thought there was a realistic chance Calgary could win a cup he'd stay, even if it's for less money. At the end of the day we are left to conclude that either Gaudreau is not a player who cares about winning it all and he wanted out of cowtown at any cost, or he thinks Calgary was never really close. Either way it's not a good look for the Calgary organization, who are always touted as a powerhouse contender yet never do anything.

  2. Seems like he wasn't going to stay in Calgary, Philly couldn't move enough contracts to open cap space and decided they were out, Isles made the lowest offer of the teams interested. That leaves Jersey and Columbus, and of those two he chose the team with a better city for raising his family, with an exciting young core, and which finished 7 places and 18 points above Jersey in the rankings this season (Plus a flight between Columbus and his parents home in Jersey is an hour at most).

Ray Ferraro also made the point on the most recent Ray and Dregs podcast that the money left on the table in Calgary vs Columbus is not as great as one thinks, adjusting for taxes (skip to about 8:00 in their most recent episode).

  3. Since he couldn't pick the flyers the flyer fan in him didn't wanna play for a rival Islanders or devils. Thinking like a 6 year old lmao

  4. Like I said it’s closer to home, instead of 6 hour flight it’s a hour and a half away. Still don’t understand what he saw in Columbus over NJ though

  5. The teams who didn't sign him just saved a boat load of money and none of them are contenders. Don't be surprised if Johnny only hits 70-80 points. It's quite weird how many players like Johnny have breakout seasons on contract year and then fall off.

  6. He probably just wants to live in a city where he can go to the grocery store with his wife and not get recognized by everyone

  7. Lego: Gaudreau coulda been the best Flame of all time.

*Lanny Macadonald, Joe Nieuwendyk, Theo Fleury, Jerome iginla, Marc Giordano, and Mikka Kiprusoff have all entered the chat*

  8. I mean. If you believe the family reasoning (which I do, some folks don´t), his first option was clearly Philly. When that didn´t happen – because the Flyers are a dumpster fire – it was pretty much wide open, because all the other team weren´t really home (but at least closer than Calgary). Growing up a Flyers fan you probably don´t like the Devils or any NY team. CBJ presented him an offer, Ex players and current palyers, who he befriends talk positively about Columbus. Furthermore, Gudreau seems to be the kind of guy (I guess), who prefers a smaller market, with lesser media frenzy, than in the big east cost markets and Canada. So after thinking about it: Columbus is the most sensible move out of all after the Flyers. 1h flight to home, not much longer or even as close to South Jersey as NJ or Long Island. Makes sense to me.

  9. I still don't get it. You would think his ultimate dream is to win a cup. The Flames probably had the best chance of that, NJ could have a promising future in a few years and it was closer to home (I don't but the rivalry thing at all). Columbus is stuck in a constant state of mediocrity and I don't see that improving anytime soon unless they begin a complete rebuild. Who in Gods's name has ever taken a substantial pay cut to play for a middling small market expansion team. It's just truly bizarre. Probably in 10 years or so we will find out the real story here, until then I guess we will just have to keep guessing.

  10. This all on the abysmal management by Fletcher in Philly..mere common sense you begin setting aside cap space shed some contracts..it was an open secret he would like to return to South Jersey area. Really a big disappointment.

  11. Flyer fans have only Chuck Fletcher and his mismanagement to blame , he should never of acquired DeAngelo knowing Gaudreau wanted Philly.

  12. Maybe you’re missing the most obvious explanation. Maybe he prefers Columbus. I’ve been to Philadelphia and New Jersey… Columbus is nicer than either.

  13. I think he wants to live a chill lifestyle, be able to go out not get noticed, just play hockey and live a quite life.

  14. New Jersey should change their state motto from “the garden state” to “ if your going to a good city your probably have to go through NJ”

  15. Explain to why anyone who has lived in NJ would want to go back to NJ ? It’s not about the devils he grew up in NJ so he knows NJ is garbage

  16. Darryl Sutter is boring as F**k. Gaudreau obviously doesn’t enjoy playing for Sutter.
That is the only explanation in my opinion.

  17. Lmao ive always found these videos kind of seem like a class presentation lol funny that you think the same

  18. I don’t feel sorry for the Flames they had two years to put in there offer or trade him has he not accepted it now they lose him for nothing samething will play out with JT and PLD

  19. I caught a message on twitter the other day that his wife is an early childhood nurse and columbus has a top notch facility. Not sure if this had any bearing on the decision…i think she works in philly at the moment?

  20. CBJ…CBJ…CBJ…CBJ…CBJ…CBJ…CBJ…CBJ…CBJ!!! THE NARRATIVE HAS CHANGED WE WILL WIN A CUP IN THE NEXT 3-4 YEARS! MARK MY WORDS! WE HAVE A HELL OF A YOUNG CORE COMING IN AS WELL!!!

  21. This argument is stupid im tired of it!! He's a multi millionair!! He's not driving 8 hours he's flying 90 minutes!

  22. A major thing that everyone seems to be ignoring is that "family reasons" probably has much more to do with his pregnant wife and where they're going to raise their kids. As opposed to where his parents are.

Remember Gaudreau is spending months on the road as an NHL player, his wife is going to be the one at home all the time. The wives often get a lot more say in these life altering decisions than NHL fans think they do. And the family friendly mantra has been Columbus's saving grace for years now.

Nathan Horton went there for his family, Gus Nyquist went there for his family, Cam Atkinson and Mark Letestu kept homes there after leaving the Blue Jackets so their families could stay there, Oliver Bjorkstrand signed a long term extension there for below market value because his wife is from Cleveland and liked the area, similarly Matt Duchene would have stayed in Columbus if they outbid the Preds because his wife is from Columbus and her family is still there.

Johnny Gaudreau specifically mentioned in his press conference that he had talked to a lot of players about what Columbus was like. And he said that behind the scenes, Columbus has developed this cult status among NHL players as a top destination to raise a young family.

So Gaudreau did do this for his family. Not his parents and sister that he joked today "it's nice that they're closer, but great they aren't too close." He did it for his own young family, his wife and unborn child.

  23. Oh big thing I just saw. John Shannon has claimed that Gaudreau's dad is a huge fan of Columbus. Really, this isn't a joke.

Yesterday, Shannon said he was on the Flame's Dad's Trip when it went through Columbus. He claims that Guy Gaudreau, Johnny's dad, was raving to him about how amazing he thought Columbus was as a city. Just had fallen in love with the city.

So it's quite possible that Johnny's dad was someone who had pushed for Columbus as a destination when Gaudreau was looking at free agency options.

  24. You know what this is really about: he’s gonna be able to see his family who doesn’t want to take the experimental shot. Shouldn’t we get rid of those stupid restrictions already? Didn’t want to bring this up, but this is what it’s really about. We all kind of know it. Glad it’s hurting Canadian teams. Punishment for being spineless.

  25. One area of the equation you have not thought of is Taxes. When all is said and done taking in State and Federal US taxes VS Canadian, provincial taxes.. He actually only left about 28K/year on the table is what I've heard… then on top of it, as you said He'll play more in the NY/PHilly/Washinton DC area and not have to deal with customs to actually go there. I can see that. Let's face it.. Calgary and Edmonton are two cities are are not major metro areas. I've heard that many Americans have trouble there due to the fact that once you get outside the city limits.. you're about a day from anywhere and it gets very rural very fast. Toronto is in Ontario and that is not much different than the population density found here in the US.. (I've drivin to Toronto having grown up in Buffalo. Other than the look of the signs (and that they are in KPH vs MPH.. ), its not much different.. but Alberta….I'm sure its hard for a NJ boy to live there. It's almost like you left civilization totally.

  26. very salty with Gaudreau and how he left but super happy for Jackets fans. They deserve a player of his caliber

  27. Not to be that guy, but I’m gonna be that guy: 8 x 10.5 M = 84 M, not 80.5 M.
    Math 👍

  28. Aww that’s cute. Little Johnny can be closer to his mommy and daddy. Mommy can even make him his favourite grilled cheese sandwiches now 😂

  29. yes it's worth 6.8blah blah bad legorocks math worth it to not live in canada as a family man who's family lives in the states

  30. Hey,, looked for your email. Want to talk to you about a future scouting program also talked to a few others on here about it.

  31. Gaudreau is American and he is starting a family. Makes total sense to want to leave Canada over the long term, especially after the last few seasons. It wasn't easy for players with families across the border.

  32. It says something about the Columbus franchise (and at least up to now, probably not in a good way) that it mystifies the hockey world why Gaudreau would sign with the Blue Jackets. The refrain is, "The Blue Jackets for god's sake!".

  33. Well Johnny can sign where ever he wants. I can understand Calgary but they did get a good 8 somewhat years of Gaudreau. I definitely don't feel like he owes Flames anything. The guy did his time. The club doesn't own the heart of these players. And Columbus finally get some back to all what they lost in term of players. I feel like Gaudreau been loyal, given that he maybe did not love being a Flame.

  34. Johnny is an all around amazing hockey player, BUT, I think he's going to benefit Columbus more than he will in Calgary. He's a goal scoring machine in the reg season, and will definitely help them get to the playoffs. What I think Calgary needs is 2 decent players that have a lot of playoff experience, like Palat, Perron, Giroux or Kadri. For the money Calgary offered Johnny they could of aquired 2 solid guys, but did absolutely nothing when they even knew he was most likely going to leave… I wish him the best of luck in Columbus!!

  35. I don’t know if someone can answer this, what is the difference in income taxes between calgary and columbus. A 10-15 % difference lowers the real “money left on the table” aspect.

  36. It’s a 55 minute flight. People still think Johnny gonna drive 8 hours to visit family. 😂😂😂 Columbus is a GREAT place to raise a family. This isn’t rocket science people

  37. Cause sutter kept saying mcdavid was the best player in the game
