Holl is what he is, a solid 3rd pairing NHL D who can step up and play 2nd pairing minutes. He has exceptional neutral zone reads and gap and as a result cuts off a lot of plays before they can happen. He reads plays well in the D zone, and while he doesn't use his size to punish players, he does so to cut off ice and pin guys against the boards so teammates can pick up the loosened pucks. Granted he looks like an awkward lummox at times, but hockey isn't figure skating where you get points for style. He's actually a very strong back skater which is why his neutral zone play is so exceptional, he doesn't need to give gap on fast players because he can stay with them and when players get outside, he turns and rides them off well. He does a lot of little things well that so many on these sites miss. Clearly, Leafs management and coaching see what I see, otherwise Holl wouldn't be the Leafs' leader in PK minutes. Zack argued that plus/minus is meaningless, but it's not for D because goals are scored on the rush or on the cycle when D are in the thick of the play. He also made an argument that his plus minus is skewed because he plays on the PK, so goals against on the PK don't count…well the Leafs PK was 7th in the NHL and Holl logged the most minutes. Also, if playing on the PK limits Holls 5 on 5, then that says more for his plus 43! Especially considering he doesn't play first line minutes with Matthews and Marner…and Nylander who plays second line minutes is a minus player. All and all the stats favor Holl. Management sees what I see…and they're the ones going over and over hours and hours of game film to make decisions on who plays. Sandin is clearly more skilled than Holl…but he's not better on the PK which is a crucial aspect in the outcomes of hockey games.
Zack is off about Robertson…the guy has had chances “16GP in the NHL” pretty limited chance if you ask me. Couple that with two bad injuries – I’d say pretty hard to make a determination at this point. I’d like to see him with a sniff in the top 6 but he will most likely start with the Marleys. FYI Zack, another mistake – this will be his third year in the AHL, with 44 point in 49 games.
