  1. I would add that we will get to know Mike Grier better when he gives news interviews for reactions to further moves in re-setting the Sharks management and players/prospects. I hope that he adds a really hard working coach, such as Joel Ward, or finds a way to pay Barry Trotz enough that he cannot refuse the opportunity such as $9 million for 3 years, breaking Mike Babcock's record of $8 million/year for a coach all time (highest paid coach in NHL currently is former Florida coach Joel Quennville at $5.25 million who they still pay). Trotz could help all NHL coaches beat inflation and increase their salaries as a group by setting a new standard for elite coaches (above $10 million salary). I think the best coaches should be paid as much as the best players.

Sharks must find some bargain contracts in the UFA market to increase team scoring radically. It is hard to know what will be a bargain this year ($3-4 million per year? or 1 million per year?). Gaudreau, Kadri, Malkin, Giroux, Trochek and Niederreiter could be targets in a bidding war among teams looking for scoring help, so they are all out of the Sharks' reach and salary cap. Sharks need more scoring specialists like Corey Perry and grit players like Pat Maroon–bargain talent that still works harder than the opposition paid much more.

Will Sharks really trade proven performers such as Brent Burns or James Reimer or buy out any big contracts? I think Grier is moving cautiously, probably due to what is happening with Chicago Black Hawks GM Richardson and what seem to be hasty decisions making his team worse. Sharks really need a #1 draft choice or very high draft choices for a few years to get elite players again. I am hoping that Grier invites more undrafted prospects to play for the Barracuda and makes many more improvements with the AHL team and Sharks' depth. Trading players who are not working their hardest makes sense but not trading the hardest working players on a struggling team due to desperation, as Chicago seems to be doing with Debrincat and Kirby Dach for example. Make a few bad trades and the other GMs will smell blood and come looking to profit from a re-building team still stumbling short of playoffs.

The Dahlen situation may be a way of paying him less than the qualifying offer, if no other team scoops him such as Vancouver. Grier is crafty enough to surprise us all and get much more out of the existing prospects and struggling Sharks players such as Vlasic. I don't think Grier is the kind of GM to give up on any player who might come back and help Sharks. Injured players or players dealing with long covid could make come backs but the Sharks must use wise judgment in sorting out their future prospects and maintaining team stability right now.

If Mike Grier really wants to work miracles, he could solve Sharks scoring problems by bring back Evander Kane for $7 million per year to fulfill his original contract with Sharks and do his job this time after his shock this season. A new management might be attractive to Kane and he may not get any better offers. Kane is a proven scorer and proven problem player who could surprise everyone despite the critics. Grier could give him a fresh start and get him back on track to becoming a leading scorer in the NHL. Sharks need many such miracles just to make the playoffs next season, and I hope Mike Grier does not give up the ship and tank to get a #1 pick.

  2. Thanks Brodie. I've somewhat detached myself from SJ for the 2 years. Glad there's some new life in the building.

  3. I dunno, so far moves look strange. Carolina definitely fleeced SJ with such high cap retention.

  4. I think Grier is doing a great job . He understands this is a true rebuild gotta tear it all down.

  5. Are the Sharks going to carry 3 goalies? It seems like a lot of potential Reimer/Hill landing spots have been taken. (Or is it just me?)
