  1. He is probably paid a million more than he should. Hollands cap management isn't his strong suit. But Darnell is a solid first pairing defenseman. Hopefully the cap goes up as suspected. I would take him over Hamilton or Jones any day.

  2. he is underrated! that’s why he’s getting paid 9.5 a year ! dumb lol

  3. A big part of people saying he's overpaid is that they think that he's playing with a two-way capable d partner when he's not

  4. As an oilers fan, his defensive game has improved immensely but he is still vastly overrated. He is a low-end number one, and should only be worth 6.5 million. Overpay but he has room to improve still, could be worth a little more one day. Regardless he will never be worth 9.25 let alone above 8 mill.

  5. Simple, better than most people think he is, not as good as his pay, but also not exactly an overpay since EDM typically has to overpay. I'd say he is about (by today's AAV's) about a 7.5 million player (basically Morgan Reilly) but as contract ages (and lets hope he keeps improving) then, the contract is fair for both sides. Everyone wants everyone to get less, but there is also 'value over time' which is basically AAV.

  6. Nobody expects him to get 90 points. 9.25 million for a guy that can't even run a powerplay or create much offence at the blue line. He may look good skating up the ice with the puck but he's still very limited offensively in comparison to d-men making 6.5 million +

  7. Fact:
Nurse is best friends with both Leon and some guy named McJesus.

Many Oilers fans argument for the over pay is as follows:

Do both Leon and McD resign with Edmonton, does one, or do neither? … if the answer is yes on both… the $9.25M is a bargain… if it's a no on both than it's an overpay… and by how much?

Nurse is a solid top pair Dman… who no longer gets PP time and likely may never again as Barrie and likely Bouchard are ahead of him here thus his points really aren't a concern… As much as I don't like the price point … if both resign… one can safely argue Nurse being a happy Oiler is a top reason.

    Note:
Nurse had 6 assists on the PP, 2 SHG, and 1SHA, and 26 ESP.

  8. I think Nurse is slightly overpaid but I could say much worse about Seth jones and Dougie Hamilton who all signed their 9 mil + contracts last season. I think Nurse gets way too much hate for his contract and he is a very good top 1D in this league and he would be a top 25 D man.

  9. Every fan base will have a blind spot for a player. Apparently the dudes on this thread have a big blind spot for Nurse.
The fact is, no team would trade for Nurse with that contract. It is not desirable at all. No fan base would be happy with him and that contract.
Maybe Nurse will get better and find his offensive ability. But right now, here's the fact : the dude is on a team with McDavid and Draisaitl and struggles to put up half a point per game.
I don't care how many minutes you can take or how good defensively you are or how well you can skate, if you can't even get half a point per game, you don't deserve 9.25 M.

  10. He' severely over rated, over paid, he's very good caliber, but not Norris trophy good, Oilers will regret this signing.

  11. He is a good player he plays hard he plays with heart and you cant really put a value on his contract but as a number 1 defense on Edmonton he gets the dough

  12. Lmfao underrated? I think he's a good defenseman, but hes definitely overrated making 9 mill plus a year.

  13. Nurse would be underrated if it weren't for the fact that he's getting paid 9 million per year for 8 years.

Good player, paid way to much for what he brings to the Oilers. Contract isn't Erik Karlsson/Seth Jones bad, but it's still looks very bad.

  14. Not underrated. Not as good as he was projected to be. Bouchard has elevated above him. Bouchard could be a Team Canada camp invite for World Cup 2024

  15. Darnell Nurse and Seth jones
Are both overrrrrrrr paid and overrated

Suck to be a oilers and Blackhawks fan

  16. Hard to be underrated when you actually aren't thar good. He's a fine defenseman he's just not 9.5 mill fine, he's like 6.5-7 mill fine

  17. I would say the most popular, the most accurate description you can pin on Nurse is that he has this never ending love hate relationship with Oiler fans. And that's never a good thing. I'd like to know what his deflection stats are. It's a sincere question. Nurse is by far responsible for most of the goals caused by deflections in front of the net. Nurse just has this deflection curse he can't seem to escape. The dude could be planted in the corner of the boards and the puck would bounce off his head and go into the net. Ok, a slight exaggeration, but you get the point. In my very humble and respectful opinion Nurse, to me, is the only huge bargaining chip the Oilers have for a block buster trade without having to give away 1rst rounders or even 2nds. Unfortunately, with his massively overpaid contract we'd have to retain some $ to get it done. Maybe a few mill. Still frees up a whopping amount to get the player we really need. With that said, one would have to ask the golden philosophical question…"do we really need Darnell Nurse" this is the only thing that pisses me off about McDavid and Draisaitl. They place more value in their friendship with Nurse than what's good for the team. IMO the 2 superstars maybe an extremely influential force when it comes to Holland making decisions about Nurse. For now I am 99.99999% sure Nurse isn't going anywhere and he is here to stay unless is has the most astonishing train wreck of a season coming up. And he probably won't. Nurse will be Nurse. Same ole, same ole. The love hate relationship between the Oiler fans and Nurse will continue right on schedule.

  18. He is way way over paid and when in cap crunch he seems more like a pylon in the middle of the road at 6 mill ish he makes sence

  19. i feel like darnell nurse just perfectly fits in the oilers system hence the contract. his play wouldnt fit so well with a bunch of other teams. i think they just rlly wanted to lock him down i mean have a look at the rest of the d squad

  20. The OILERS offered the seventh overall pick at the 2013 draft to Vancouver for Cory Schneider which ultimately the Oilers drafted Darnell Nurse.. Gillis, did not want to give a division rival what was a very good goalie in Schneider. Gillis then traded Schneider for the ninth overall pick from New Jersey to draft Bo Horvat. Gillis should have accepted the trade

  21. Nurse is the single most overpaid player in the entire NHL.

$9.25 million for a guy who isn’t even the third best DMan on the team, and has already peaked as a player? Hahaha
