  1. Smart financial move by the team that is the perpetual bottom dweller in league attendance, let’s not take advantage of this opportunity to sell a ton of jerseys or distinguish yourselves from the other two NYC metro teams

  2. Long answer sorta short about NY, I live in freeport NY 5mins away from the coli. Ny is full of assholes, its just ny. Everybody shits on each other that dont even know the islanders, its just how it is. Either people are assholes or extremely nice, kind and open. Its just 50/50 here. Seen isles fans fight each other in the parking lot, been called a wetback at a game by another isles fan. Im hispanic and theres not alot of us at games. Just a weird place of alot of different backgrounds. You never know which isle fan you’re sitting next to. Its changed recently with nothing with positivity. But those dark years was rough going to a game. But im just passionate about my team as I grew up a 5 min drive to the games.

  3. I ordered a knock off Fisherman jersey from China because I wanted one so bad.

  4. I don’t get the hate for this, I really like it, and I definitely prefer it to their normal home jersey

Edit: wow these comments are brutal

  5. Wait, this just dawned on me…Islanders' 50th is coming up soon…what if they're waiting until then to bring back the fisherman? That doesn't excuse their complete lack of effort here, but it's something to think about…

  6. I tried to apply for the islanders digital media internship but got denied… if I got accepted I would have made sure the reverse retro was the fisherman jersey

  7. Yeah I think they made an amazing jersey. Although they did not do a good retro respective jersey.

  8. I don't see anything new. Fishermam should have been cooler than repeating this design which was used just a coupld of years ago.

  9. I’m an isles fan and I’m not happy. It’s upsetting to see other teams take risks and have fun with this. The isles fans that hate the fisherman are generally against progress in any way and usually over 50 years old. We all understand that it was a dark time in our franchise, in fact most years outside of the 80’s were dark times. The fisherman has NO threat of replacing our logo so I’m not sure what the fear is. I’m not sure why negative fans are so vocal over a jersey that will be worn 10 times and would be purchased by thousands outside of our little island. What’s even funnier about the “no fisherman” base is they can’t acknowledge that the people that truly want an alternate fisherman became fans during this period. If anything they should embrace the fact that new fans were made at all during this tragic time. It didn’t even have to be the fisherman per se, they could have done something fun relating to it. I’m rambling, but in short.. did I love the fisherman, no. Can I acknowledge that it’s a fun thing that people feel nostalgic about, yes. Do I think people outside of Long Island would buy the fisherman jersey, yes. Every single alternate jersey that the islanders have had has been complete trash, the “no fisherman” crowd would have learned to live with it for about 10 games or less. To tie all of this into a nice bow this uniform also has no connection to the 80’s like they claim. The islanders didn’t wear navy or that shade of orange in the 80’s. They’re using the early-mid 2000’s navy with the current orange.

  10. It was a bad time but the best Jersey it is the only one that showed what an islander is. A Mariner! It is a better mascot then that dumb reused dragon!

  11. Too generic, and they should have definitely brought back the Fisherman..major fail!

  12. OK, as an Islanders fan who was alive during the Cup years and the unfortunate late 90's I must say this was a very poor and insulting attempt and they could have made a better effort like the orange jersey. That said, I'm not at all disappointed it's not the God awful Fishsticks jersey. I can still hear the "We want fishsticks" chants raining down from every arena in the league(including our beloved dump) or the Rags fans throwing fishsticks during warmups the first game in the Garden wearing that monstrosity. Sorry but I don't want to give other teams fans more reason to humiliate Isles fans anymore than they already do, again.

  13. The Fisherman jersey represents the peak of Islanders loserdom. So a lot have a terrible taste in their mouths when it comes to it. But, there is a ton of things they could've done. They could've done the classic design in the fisherman colors or classic colors in the fisherman wave pattern. Lots of stuff they could've done. Doesn't need to have the fisherman logo specifically.

  14. As a Ranger fan, it will be way funnier now to still call out "We Want Fishsticks". It wouldn't have been as fun if they had reclaimed the fisherman.
But even so, it's sad the Islanders and Oilers didn't put any effort in to this nice happening.

  15. I’ve had a lot of encounters with terrible islanders fans too lol. Common theme here

  16. The Fisherman jersey minus the logo. Swap in the Lighthouse patch logo. Satisfies most fans from both sides of the issue and would look OUTSTANDING.

  17. I like them more than Detroit's.. The colors are so good that the jersey literally can't be bad. Not sure why why everyone is hating so much

  18. Not a fan of this jersey. Don't care for the shade of blue, its either not dark enough or to dark for my taste. They had to of put more effort in then this. With the little effort it almost makes me think that they tried to bring back the fisherman logo and may of had licensing issue with Gorton's. I love the fisherman jersey and would of loved to of had the logo back for something other then just limited run apparel there has to be something else. They could of at least used the orange pumpkin jerseys of the early 2000's.

  19. It's nice, but it's too similar to their current home jersey. I woulda loved to see a Reverse Retro of the "Gordon's Fisherman" jersey

  20. I sold my Isles fisherman jersey on Ebay in the early 00's for stupid cheap. It's one of my biggest jersey collecting regrets to this day. I'd love to have that one back, considering what I see they're going for nowadays. Not to mention, I just loved that thing, despite the hate it used to get.

  21. I hate it. If we weren’t going to do a fisherman Jersey than we should have done an orange jersey.

  22. Its bcuz theyre isles trash…all high & mighty. Clinging on what happened 40yrs ago like a hs jock who is a failure at life.

  23. I'm not excusing people when they act rude and nasty. What I'll do is explain where the seething hatred for that jersey comes from and why fans are so negatively passionate about it and why they are so insulting towards those people who may like, which I personally consider the Fish Stick Abomination. The fisherman logo has become the symbol of the nearly 30 year insane asylum that was the New York Islanders ownership and management team. You need to understand the many layers of this situation, the history, the atmosphere and the reality on the ground of the fanbase. The team has always been a second class citizen in the NHL universe. When they were first created because there were many hockey fans on Long Island that didn't like the Rangers. Long Island has always been considered a "forgotten" and overlooked region. Most people either think as a playground for the rich but many people are actually working class and poor. So they as usual are discounted and ignored. I come from that demographic. They got credit during the dynasty and set all-time records. But that was now starting on 40 years ago. My introduction to hockey was the Miracle on Ice hockey team and me recognizing Ken Morrow from that squad when I saw my first Islanders game on TV shortly after the Olympics. So there's always been that "chip on the shoulder" little brother mentality that runs deep in the history off this team and those from the Island. After the dynasty they started going down as all sports dynasties do. Part of the problem was the ownership by John Pickett, who was never enthusiastic and he was lucky to have Bill Torrey and Al Arbour running the show. He was along for the ride. There was some issues with other coaches. Torrey was still there but it wasn't the same. They were mediocre. They had a little turnaround after trading away Pat LaFontaine, which gave them stars like Pierre Turgeon, Benoit Hogue, Uwe Krupp and Steve Thomas. Then Torrey was fired. That last big trade propelled them to the 1993 Wales Conference Finals. But then the Dark Times. Milbury. (insert dark forbidding music). He was coach and GM and completely destroyed the team. The team was also bought by a con artist named John Spano. You can't make this stuff up. An NHL team was actually bought by someone who could not afford to buy this team. Milbury made ridiculous trades and insane draft picks that set the team back decades, all while crowing how brilliant he was and the fans needed to shut up. There was the Gluckstern and Millstein ownership group that was looking to make some big real estate deal that never happened. They didn't care about hockey. That then brought us Computer Associates chairman Charles Wang. To his credit they are still on the LI because of him, but he let Milbury bury this team for over a decade. Wang was the one who asked why they just didn't put a sumo wrestler in as the goalie. Just to rehash some of those wonderful moves by Milbury, traded Todd Bertuzzi and Bryan McCabe for Trevor Linden. Todd Bertuzzi was massively Traded away future Hall of Famer Zdeno Chara and a first round pick which would have been Jason Spezza to Ottawa for Alexei Yashin. Then gave Yashin considered one of the 2 worst deals in NHL history where he would be paid well after his retirement. Then the DiPietro Debacle. After drafting another Future Hall of Famer, Roberto Luongo a few years before and he was finally ready to play, Milbury drafts Rick DiPietro 1st overall while Marian Gaborik and Dany Heatley are sitting there. They then trade Luongo and Olli Jokinen (whom they got from LA in the Ziggy Palffy deal which was also another terrible deal) for such immortal names as Oleg Kvasha and Mark Parrish. The team lost other draft picks in bad trades such as Eric Brewer and Wade Redden. Complete mismanagement and incompetence while abusing the fans and the team by tarnishing the once proud name. It's like some guy your sister or mom dates or marries and abuses that person, they can't see it and you can't do anything about it. Even the police won't get involved. I know a rather extreme example but best explains what the fans were forced to endure for decades. Then when Milbury was transitioned out of power(not fired) they hired Neil Smith. Admittedly not my favorite person with my unhealthy hatred of the Rangers but he was a real NHL GM and did actually get his hockey career start with the Isles. He was fired 1 MONTH AND 10 DAYS AFTER HIS HIRING! The team brought former Islander Pat LaFontaine in as an advisor with Smith. Of course he left after this insanity! The team then proceeded to erase LaFontaine as much as they could from their history and he became persona no grata because he stood up for what was right against the ownership and management. Thank goodness the new team leadership has reconciled with him. Anyway, you might ask who was the this amazing candidate that could have someone fired so quickly? GARTH SNOW!!!! The retiring backup goalie because Charles Wang thought hew was really smart!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!! It never ends! He was all in power for over a decade until Lou and Barry finally got hired. He made some good picks, did some decent dumpster diving but also made some other very bad moves while being arrogant and abusive to the fans. Some bad picks were Robert Nilsson (they announced his father Kent when they made the pick) instead of Zach Parise, Josh Bailey in the 1st round instead of Erik Karlsson and Nino Neideritter instead of Vladimir Tarasenko. This was the time when the team would take on contracts of retired players to get to the SALARY FLOOR. He is also responsible for the 2nd of the two worst deals in NHL history by repeating the farce of Yashin with the nearly identical Rick DiPietro deal that is still paying him after retirement! We now have a good owner, management and coaching that are actually trying to compete. It's been decades of the sickest and cruelest circus ever where we didn't even know if we would have an arena until recently! They almost left! Then the most recent chapter when the team was forced to overpay and give way too long contracts to okay players because nobody wanted to play here. Then the Tavares debacle, when we finally got a great player to build around, do that, he begs to not be traded away at the deadline, then signs somewhere else. Leaving the team without any compensation. We would have been fine with him getting traded away and been happy when he returned as long as we got something in return. It's a business. It didn't turn out that way. The team even re-signed Josh Bailey because he was such close friends with him. Once again remember everything that has happened for the last 30 years. Islanders fans are also dealing with the New York Ranger fan base, though some are knowledgeable but very arrogant and treat our team and its fans like subhuman trash. We are forced to live side by side with them because of our proximity. Plus the NHL promotes the Rangers but considers our team like second class citizens. In the 90s they changed the logo to the Fisherman ignoring the dynasty adding just another joke of many jokes upon this team. That logo is a representation of everything I've listed here and that's where the hatred for that logo and anger comes from (though wrong to express in such an aggressive way) to those who may like that logo. I loathe that logo and grumble and need to calm myself down when anyone expresses positive feedback about that symbol. The ironic thing is that I would be okay if they let their AHL team wear that logo. I personally want the Isles to move their AHL team from Bridgeport to the Coliseum, when the new arena opens, use that logo ,come up with a new name and move their ECHL team to Bridgeport for a better commute hub for the 3 levels of hockey. Worcester isn't far (especially when they had those teams in California and Missouri), but I always thought Boston should have Worcester as their ECHL team while maintaining Providence in the AHL. Hopefully after reading this insanely long explanation, you might now understand where that anger is coming from. I do apologize for those fans that were so over the top. Take care.

  24. They really missed great marketing with bringing back the Fisherman jersey. With meme culture the Islanders could have literally boosted their revanue with bringing back the Fisherman jersey. I want my fishsticks!!!

  25. Also I know this is an additional comment but even if they wanted to ignore the Fisherman jersey why didn't they then bring back their alternate jerseys from 2001/02 and just reversed the orange and blue. EVEN THAT would have been better than bringing the old away jersey
