This has to be a big year in Raleigh.
They're the deepest team in the NHL. When Pacioretty gets back, they will have the ability to hurt you with all 4 lines. What they lack is that game-breaking talent. Aho, Svechnikov, and Pacioretty are great, but there's no MacKinnon, Makar, Point, Kucherov, Tarasenko, Ovechkin, or Crosby of the teams that have won it recently. They will need to have their depth firing going into the playoffs, but if they get that, they look very strong.
Their blueline is incredible. That top 4 is one of the best in the NHL, and they're deep. Coghlan, de Haan, Chatfield, and Bear all competing for the final 2 D spots when all of them could genuinely be in the NHL is a strong defense. Slavin is Slavin, and Burns offers another gear for the Canes that they haven't had. He's got the stature of Hamilton and the will to win of DeAngelo without the off-ice BS. His age is a concern about regression, sure. But they don't need him to be Norris-winning Brent Burns.
Goaltending is still a little concerning, although not for performance reasons. Andersen is going to be strong again. When he's healthy, he's really good. The same stands for Antti Raanta. Their health is my biggest concern for this team. Kochetkov and Sawchenko down in the AHL will help now that both have some serious NHL experience, and Kochetkov even has Playoff wins against Boston.
Kotkaniemi is a big question mark. All the underlying numbers suggest that Jesperi Kotkaniemi is going to be fine but if he does struggle, it;s who fills that 2C role. There is Paul Stastny & Jordan Staal that can both fill that role. Necas is an outside shout to fill it, and even someone like Jack Drury that has made the roster looks like he could be a good help.
Other new additions with guys like Kase will make that bottom six very good, and it makes an already very strong penalty kill even stronger. Their power play could use some help, but Pacioretty and Burns should help them out there. It really does look like if the Canes are going to win the cup, this has to be the year. This is the best position that the franchise has ever been in regarding their ability to win a cup before a season starts.
I worry about Rod Brind'amour's game management. He's great at helping players get better, but he isn't good at knowing when to change his lines, and he's not good at deploying players when they should be.
I worry about their goalscoring too. Pacioretty will help when he is back in February, but that is a long time away. With the Metropolitan being so tight, can the Canes stay in the hunt without their big goal-scoring replacement? It's really difficult to project. The Metropolitan is the most difficult division in hockey year after year and this looks the same again, but I think they do win the Metropolitan Division title again.
