During my turkey coma last night I watched about an hour of game and highlights of Kovacevic. This is what I saw.
Pros:
Smooth skater, long effective stride, very very good backwards skater with strong crossovers.
Rangy, great reach. Didn’t get caught reaching once… Not once, and never got beat 1 on 1.
Laser wrister. But also, it was really interesting watching him take some heat off his shots if the puck want settled. This ensured he got the puck on net in a very responsible way (concerning deflection opportunities).
He’s mean, finishes his checks cleanly.
His puck control is simple and effective. Good puck protection while keeping his feet moving.
Cons:
Little bit slow maybe re: forward skating in the NHL.
Passing often isn’t flat up ice, his D to D is alright.
Screens his own goalie pretty frequently.
Chases the corner sometimes, but at least he buries the guy.
In brief. Lots of similarities to Ben Chiarot but a better skater, longer reach, and not as good in front of the net.
