Please speculate below:
I mean it’s a way to “update” the logo without a drastic change
Maybe it’s for another alt or it could just be for marketing purposes.
Please don’t change the logo.

I like it as an alternate mark (it looks great on black as a white or red logo and it also scales nicely if you make it small like on Twitter) but I love the current logo with the circle too much to want a permanent change.
The current logo is brilliant because it works so well on both the home and road jerseys. The white circle makes the red NJ pop off the home jerseys while being able to do the same on the road jerseys by fading into the background more since you just read the black stroke of the circle framing the red NJ.
