What the Panthers gave up to get Matt had me confused right from the start. Now I hear they plan to be a more defensive team……..without Weegar.
Now I'm REALLY confused.
I have a theory about what convinced Lou to kick Trotz, in chronical order.
1) Putting Komarov on the Barzal line…EVER.
2) Sitting a healthy Wahlstrom during the 2020 playoffs while playing Komarov, an ineffective Zajac, and an injured Pageau.
3) Asking to expose Eberle while protecting Clutterbuck for the expansion draft. (I truly believe this was at Barrys insistence. He didn't like Eberle' weak 2-way game, (and I don't blame him) and loved Clutter 'grit'.
4) Lanes success in those 3 games he coached while Barry was with family. Lane said Lou told him "Coach them as if it's YOUR team". A clear indication Lou wanted change, not more of the same. Lou must have already seen something in Lane, and may have feared other GM's would come courting while Barry played out his contract.
I also thing Barry was burnt out, and looking for a GM? position. If Barry doesn't go back to coaching, I wouldn't be shocked if he ends up in the Isles front office being groomed for the GM position. The guy has so much respect, trust, and contacts in the sport, he could make for a great GM.
