Let me know your expectations for the blues this off-season
I think Dubas should look into a couple of players from the Blues
No potential matthew tkachuk trade. St louis blues fan here and id love to see him in a blues uniform playing alone side his long time friend Robert thomas and wearing the same blue note as his father. Rumors i have been hearing he wants to be here
Sign Mikkola, Perunivich, Leddy and Perron. Go with a young backup goalie and try to shop Parayko. Parayko was by far the blues worst defenseman in the playoffs and was underwhelming in the regular season also. His lack of emotion and grit is so disappointing and not what you need out of your #1 defenseman. From errant passes to just throwing the puck to the opposing teams in the neutral zone and give aways in the playoffs. I’d rather just give the job to Faulk and give Perunivich a shot in your top 4. Then I’d use Paraykos money to sign a player like Tkachuck or try to get elite forward capable of 100pts. The reality is we learned everything we needed to in that Avs series. We learned Binnington is still capable of being Binnington and his puck handling skills are heavily needed to neutralize a team like the Avs offense. We learned that The Blues not having that 100pt elite guy is an issue. Look I love Perron. He’s amazing. But When your best player in the playoffs is Perron you have big problems. Just my opinion!
Trade Tarasenko and go after Matthew Tkachuk!!!
Well, of course, this is the review I've been waiting for—the Blues had a very good season overall , despite a few hiccups . 3rd overall in goals scored with over 300 is amazing, and the scoring depth was unmatched, with 9 players hitting 20 goals or more. Their special teams were exceptional, 2nd best PP in the NHL and a top 5 PK is awesome work. OK, so, I expect both RFA d-men to be qualified, both played well last season. And, of the UFAs, the Blues absolutely have to resign David Perron, ideally for 3-5 years–they were foolish enough to let him go twice before but, I really don't think they let their #1 PP sniper leave. In the case of Tyler Bozak, he's been steady for the Blues, but, me thinks ,maybe, they don't make him an offer right away, to see what else is cooking–then, if he'll resign for the same dollars, it makes sense to keep him. Nick Leddy played well after being acquired at the trade deadline, but I don't see them keeping him , unless the plan is to move Parayko for cap flexibility (he has a huge contract IMHO) and also keep Perunovich as a top 6 D. Ah, and , Ville Husso–IMHO, the Blues are already paying Binnington $6Mil/season for 4 more years, and, based on Husso's play and the other teams desperately looking for a #1 goalie, I just don't see how the Blues can afford to keep him. My guess is that they don't offer Husso the big bucks contract , but, rather, go with Charlie Lindgren as the backup , while Joel Hofer gets some more experience and seasoning as the #1 AHL goalie. And I really hope they keep Tarasenko, who was their top scorer, but, if they do trade him, he'll fetch a very good return, after a very good season. Oh, and resign O'Reilly for 4-5 more years to finish him out as a Blue. All being said, the Blues are a solid team, and will continue to be a playoff team next season–will be very interesting to see what moves GM Armstrong decides to make. Thanks for a very excellent Blues analysis.
It would be nice to see them extend O'Reilly and possibly lower his cap hit for the 22-23 season. I think they really need to upgrade at the blue line possibly via trade. Not sure what is available or what may have to be surrendered. It appeared as though their biggest question mark was their inability to move the puck out of their defensive zone.
It’s up to Tarasenko as to whether he gets traded or not. They definitely want Mikkola back and I suspect they’d love to have leddy back also but at what price. I think Krug could be shipped with ether development Mikkola and Perunovich. Perron should be a Blue until he hangs them up. The biggest question IMO is Binnginton. Which player will show up. He was clueless almost all season but showed signs of his former self in the playoffs. I think the Avs won the series when Binnginton got hurt. We’ll see what happens but I would like to see a veteran signed who can help push the kids. This team loses focus at times. It’s very frustrating. Barbashev isnt going anywhere
At 27 Husso has to go where the money is. This could be the one time he can cash in he won’t get $4-5 but I can easily see him getting $2.5-3 for 3-4. Perron will probably sig for around $4 where he’s at now and oreilly will retire a Blue. He’s become the face of the organization. Kyrou really faded down the stretch. He needs to improve his conditioning and stay away from the senseless all star game
What do you think about taking the automatic offensive zone faceoff on the power play out of the game.Wouldnt the goalie injuries go down.In my opinion, and many others, the goalies since the change have been taking a beating. The age a goalie is able to still play is affected.Look at Carey Price.
Did we skip a team?
The playoffs told us what we needed to know about goaltending. Husso faded and Binnington was in god mode. Goalies have down seasons and Binnington hopefully just had his.
Orielly was excellent this year. His recovery from Covid is what slowed him down. He got going again at the right time, hands down our best player in the playoffs. Hopefully he'll take a discount to stay in stl and keep the team competitive.
If you can affordably upgrade the blue line you have to take the shot. When I say upgrade the blue line I don’t mean trade Parayko and then try to fill two top 4 d spots.
Plan: Don't let a cheapshot artist take out your best players year after year
Great analysis – yes the Blues had a good season and yes the Blues were underrated the whole season and playoffs – probably why most (outside of STL) picked Minn in Round 1 and Minn was a very hot team going into the playoffs. We were out matched at times by Col, but at other times we shut down Rantanen, Landeskog, MacKinnon, and Makar well – far superior than Nash and EdM did. Yes, we were in Round 2 without Krug and Binnington (for 60+ % of the series – injured in game 3 period 1). The injury was devastating because Binnington played like the Binnington of 2019 in this play-offs. They will bring back Perron and the rest will go to either a back-up G (they could re-sign Lindgren for cheap) or a D-Man (low to middle priced) and 2 RFA’s that will count against the cap in Perunovich and Mikkola. Defense-wise we need someone who can play top 4 on the left – you could rotate Perunovich, Scandella, Mikkola, and the AHL dark horse Tucker. Rosen is a lefty shot too. On the right, I see us only at Faulk, Parayko, and Bortuzzo so we could use depth – top 4 or bottom pair – challenge the minutes of Parayko type of a player. At the forward position so much depth, I don’t know if Schenn, Kyrou, and Barbashev crack the the top 2 lines. In the AHL, you have Anas, Bolduc, Pecca, Kostin. I mention the AHL because the Blues AHL team is 1 win away from going to the Calder Cup Finals. As far as the Blues, we boasted 9-20 goal scores from last year – goal scoring disappeared in the play-offs for a healthy Barbashev, thus maybe that’s why the rumors. Scandella has not lived up to the Bouwmeester-caliber player we wanted him to be, so he was widely discussed by Blues fans as trade-bait well, until Parayko had a very costly bad game 6 in Rd 2. Anyway to sum up, I would want a right-sided D-man.
It's amazing that other NHL teams around the league can acquire defenseman but the Blues can't? How long are the Blues going to carry that Marco Scandella not so good contract around? Were is our new top 2 or 4 defenseman that we desperately need! The Blues championship win now window is closing fast! And Charlie Lindgren becomes a free agent Wed? Other teams are seeking his services but the Blues wouldn't play Charlie 1 period in the playoffs after going 5-0 when he was here with a 1.22 gaa and a 958 save pct? Charlie helped the Thunderbirds make the Calder Cup this year! Don't you think Charlie deserves to be atleast a backup to Binner? Let's honor Tarasenko's trade request and let him go he earned it!
